Gas / Propane / Butane Camping Stoves

The stove is an important piece of camping equipment, so it’s important to get it right. The first thing to consider is what type of fuel you want the stove to use. By far the most popular is the gas camping stove, also know as a propane stove or a butane stove. Most gas and propane stoves have a convenient push button ignition so they are ideal for family camping or for the backpacker.

There are also various types of gas that you can use. We’ve already mentioned propane gas & butane gas. You could also opt for a white gas burning stove, which are great for slow burning and camping in cold weather. There’s unleaded gasoline which is cheap but requires you to clean the stove more often. The same can be said of kerosene, which should also be used only in a well ventilated area. If you simply can’t choose, you could get yourself a dual fuel stove which will run on most (if not all) of the above mentioned fuels. There’s no shortage in choice, so it’s simply down to you planning ahead & finding the most suitable one for your camping party.

Next is the size of the stove you’re going to be using. Are you a lone backpacker, or do you have a large family? Camping stoves come in a variety of sizes to suit all needs, so make sure you shop around to find the right one. As a backpacker, you don’t want to be carrying around more weight than is necessary. However, as a family, you don’t want 3 of the kids having to wait around while the rest of the family’s dinner is cooked!

Camping Grills

Another option, or possibly as an addition to a stove, is a camping grill. The grill differs in that it comprises of a grate instead of a pan holder. This allows you to cook things like hamburgers & hotdogs a whole lot easier than in a pan. However, stoves have the advantage when it comes to heating water, or cooking food in a pan (beans, soup, stew etc). For large families or groups, our recommendation would be to have both. There are actually hybrids which offer both a stove and a grill, but more often than not the grill is too small for a large group of people.
